Coldplay: Background

Coldplay began as a mutual desire to start a band shared by Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland. The two met in college at University College London and made their dream a reality a year later inn 1997 as the group Pectoralz. Eventually they picked up Will Champion and Guy Berryman and Coldplay was complete. The group took the name with permission from Tim Rice-Oxley, whose band had tried the name out but did not like it.

The group signed a five-record deal with Parlphone records and began working after they finished their final examinations in 1999. Coldplay clashed at first in the studios, but worked through the initial bumpy road and released three EPs, none of which produced a sizable hit. The band finally made it onto Radio 1 in the UK with the single “Shiver” and really broke out with the single “Yellow”. The group released their first album in July 2000 and was an instant hit in Britain, reaching number one on the charts.

Coldplay released the album in America with good record sales, but nothing that could compare to their success back at home. The record slowly won over their cousins across the Atlantic and eventually took home a Grammy in 2002 for Best Alternative Music. That year the group released their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and again scored big all over the world.

Their third album, X&Y, followed suit and was a huge commercial success, selling 8.3 million records in 2005. Critics provided some backlash though and the band has referred to the last album as the last in a trilogy, signaling a change in the melodic that they themselves call very heavy soft rock.

Coldplay: 2008 Tickets

Coldplay comes back from a long deserved hiatus with their fourth album, Viva la Vida. The album is sadi to have been strongly influenced by their stops in Latin America and Spain during their world tours. The album is set for a June release that is immediately followed by the Viva la Vida World Tour.

The tour will go for nearly 50 dates in North America, beginning in New York on June 23 and ending in Slat Lake City on November 22. Then the tour will turn to Europe.
