The members of Meshell Ndegeocello grew up together. The group was influenced by Blind Boy Fuller. Meshell Ndegeocello began playing on the street for anyone who would listen. One of the group's members used to listen to his aunt's record collection constantly as a child.

A member of Meshell Ndegeocello started dating a girl whose grandfatherwas a record executive. She passed the single on to them and the band signed a record deal soon after. The bandspent years before being signed as an opening act. After the single hit the airwaves and became incredibly popular, Meshell Ndegeocello knew they’d made it big and were not willing to be just another one hit wonder. The group plays plenty of arenas, but would rather play in the smaller bars in which they began.

The group recently completed their new project, but they are plotting their next move already. Meshell Ndegeocello's most current release has taken the band in a different direction, incorporating more influences than previous albums.
