The P olice: Background
In 1977 drummer Stewart Copeland and singer Sting met in a jazz club in Britain. The meeting resulted in The Police. They picked up a guitarist in Henry Padovani in January and released a single a month later that took them to touring as a supporting act. A gum commercial and under funded album recording later, The Police were signed to A&R Records.
“Roxanne” and the rest of the album, entitled Outlandos d’Amour, was sent across the Atlantic to tour the United States in a Ford Econoline van. Soon The Police were topping the charts with ‘Message In A Bottle” and the group was winning Grammy’s for instrumentals like “Walking on the Moon”.
The meteoric rise in fame of the progressive rock group that mixed complex lyrics and precise instrumentals also garnered a lot of attention for the front man, Sting. Sting began to pursue acting and solo recordings outside of The Police and the rift in the group started. The rift had begun, but the group was still as popular as ever, with hit singles “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da”.
The group’s success continued with the release of a fourth album, “Ghost in the Machine”, and the public continued to love singles like “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” and Invisible Sun”. The group came together one last time before unofficially splitting up to record Synchronicity in 1983. The album was a tremendous success and was up for a number of Grammy’s, but Michael Jackson’s classic Thriller was its competition. The Police took home the Grammy for Song of the Year, but came up empty every where else.
