The documentary-style musical, Jersey Boys I based on the lives of one of the most successful '60s rock ‘n roll bands, the Four Seasons. Starring J. Robert Spencer as "Nick Massi”, Christian Hoff as "Tommy DeVito”, John Lloyd Young as "Frankie Valli" and Daniel Reichard as "Bob Gaudio" the musical opened on Broadway on November 6, 2005 at the August Wilson Theatre.
The major factor in this musical’s success is the concerted excellence of the four principals. Under the direction of Des McAnuff, artistic director at La Jolla Playhouse, realism has its day in the story of four talented young men who transcend their discouraging beginnings.
On October 5, 2004 Jersy Boys premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse and at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco on December 10, 2006 began the first national Jersy Boys tour. The tour ended on On May 3, 2007 and started the preparations for the Los Angeles premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre.
Later, on October 5, 2007 with Chicagoan Michael Ingersoll in the role of Nick Massi started the second tour. Starring Jeff Leibow as Nick Massi, Andrew Rannells as Bob Gaudio, Bryan McElroy as Tommy DeVito and Rick Faugno as Frankie Valli was played a special holiday return engagement at the Curran from November 20 to December 30, 2007.
In 2008 at London's Prince Edward Theatre the musical will make its West End debut and for the press the show was opened on March 18, 2008. It was made original cast recording to Jersy Boys by Rhino Entertainment.
The performances and staging are as good as can be expected and Howell Binkley needs to be thanked for the distinctive lighting. Not to be ignored are the non-singing performers like Mark Lotitio, who skillfully handles several roles. Jersey Boys received outstanding reviews on the first night itself.
