The Lord of the Rings film trilogy consists of three live-action fantasy epic films: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring from 2001, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers from 2002 and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King from 2003 based on the three-volume book The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II. The movie follows the book's general storyline, but also features some additions to and deviations from the source material. The fils are distributed by New Line Cinema and directed and produced by Peter Jackson. It is set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, and the three films follow the young hobbit Frodo Baggins as he and a Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring and its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.

After the devidation of the Fellowship Frodo continues the quest with his companion Sam and the treacherous Gollum. The first part of the movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in December 19, 2001, the second The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was released in December 18, 2002 and the third The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King released in December 17, 2003. The book is published by Allen & Unwin in 1954 and 1955. The three films together were nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards and won 17.
